Trivia at the Lansdowne Hotel, Chippendale

Tuesday 7:30pm

The Lansdowne hotel pulls its usual student crowd for its trivia night, where it pulls a decent crowd which is significantly assisted by the presence of an overlapping happy hour between 8pm - 9pm.  The pub also has $11 jugs of Boags Draught for the whole night.

The prize pool is $150 for the normal trivia and an additional $50 that can be earned in the bonus round. There is also a jackpot at the end, which grows by $50 each week that it doesn't go off.

The night is run by Trivia Magic, which is responsible for a number of the trivia shows within Newtown including the one at the Marlborough Hotel.

Trivia at the Orange Grove Hotel is run by Brian Cobb of Planet Trivia.  He is the same host who runs the trivia at the Light Brigade Hotel in Woolahra and at the Australian Heritage Hotel in the Rocks.

The Planet Trivia company is one of the smaller trivia companies in Sydney with about 15 pubs and clubs operating their trivia each week.

Trivia at Drummoyne Sailing Club, Drummoyne

Thursday 6:30pm

The Drummoyne Sailing Club Trivia is run by the Innquizitive company and occurs on Thursday nights at 6:30pm. The venue surprisingly pulls a pretty significant crowd with typically 20 plus teams, the vast majority which are from the older demographic. Each time I have gone to this venue, the audio has been erratic and also the televisions on which aspects of the questions are shown are sporadically spread around the venue and consequently the choice of table is vitally important as you may be in a significant disadvantage.

Innquizitive trivia provides a very professional looking operation with all questions being screened on the big screen with associated audiovisual components and all answers being denoted in a professionally printed answer book of which a page is teared and returned each round. Innquizitive trivia is suited to those who like their trivia long and slow, as the company produces approximately 50 questions split up in five rounds. This combined with the marking of the answer books five different times can mean that their nights drag out over the 3 hour mark. Also it is important to get in early in some venues to ensure you have vision of a television as constantly getting up to check the screen can get annoying.

Tuesday 6:30pm

One of the few trivia venues that cost money to be involved in, however the $1 entry fee is unlikely to break the bank for anyone.  It is run by Jason Montgomery of Trivia Master Australia, who is famous as the host of the trivia at the North Bondi RSL.  This trivia is run in a very similar fashion with is iconic paper aeroplane competitions get a look in, as well as his Triv-art section.

The night pulls a predominately office workers crowd, as it is one of the few CBD trivias on offer and this is the reason for the slightly earlier starting time at 6:30pm than the norm.

Trivia at the Royal Oak Hotel, Balmain

Wednesday 7:30pm

Wednesday nights in Balmain would have to be the most competitive scene of trivia in Sydney with 4 pubs in walking distance to each other all offering up a trivia night.  The reason cancellation of the Exchange Hotel's trivia and the expected cancellation of the one at Unity Hall Hotel may well mean that the Royal Oak Hotel will soon have it pretty much to themselves.  The Royal Oak Hotel trivia is run by Innquizitive, and pulls a crowd which fills out the smallish room at the front of the pub, approximately 10 to 15 teams.  The crowd is definitely middle age, and consequently the trivia competition can be quite tough.

Trivia at Freeway Hotel, Artarmon

Wednesday 7:30pm

This hulking pub positioned on the edge of the industrial area of Artarmon runs trivia on Wednesday nights each week.  Pulling in a significant crowd, as per most of the trivia nights on the North Shore, it has a majority of mature players but also a smattering of large teams of young players.   This competitive trivia is run by Tim Shorter of Fame Trivia.

The night is run by Fame Trivia who write all their own questions and then supply them to the hosts, so there is no risk of obscure questions based on the interests of the host (however this does take some of the fun out of it).  Fame Trivia run two groups of 20 questions, split up by a significant gap which may not be too everyone's liking.  Their nights tend to take about 2 and a half hours from start to finish.  The questions that they write tend to be some of the stronger around, covering a broad range of topics but including a large number of answers that are able to be deduced rather than simply known or not. They do tend to keep it pretty serious though, with the presence of simply who am I questions that you need to run up and hand to the host, and an absence of any of the more fun (silly) trivia activities such as paper aeroplane competitions and playdo.

Tuesdays 7:30pm

Definitely one of Sydney's most famous Trivias, pulling a consistent crowd of regulars which includes Uranus Titans and the enigmatic Super Doug.  The room is typically full with a middle age crowd of trivia veterans.

Jason Montongomery who runs Trivia Master Australia runs the show, he is also the host of the trivia nights at the Robin Hood Hotel and the City Hotel.   He is the originator of some of the more interesting in between round competitions with his paper aeroplane competitions and Triv-art.  This is an independent trivia and consequently the host is responsible for the questions, which allows him room to mould them to the audience for each place.

Prizes are $50 for first place, $25 for second and $10 for third.

Monday 7:00pm - 9:30pm

Newtown Hotel Monday night trivia is hosted by DJ cum Trivia Host Mike Blades, who hosts what was one of Sydney's more popular trivia nights at The Fringe Bar, Oxford Street (now the Unicorn Hotel).  He also runs the trivia at Trinity Bar in Surry Hills on a Wednesday night.

The night pulls a significant crowd, which is probably a large part due to the popularity and size of the pub. The crowd is that which would be expected from Newtown, predominately Students but with a smattering of older hipsters.

The prizes on offer include drinks and bar credit for the top places.
